South Africa Loses Ottneil Baartman for Australia ODIs Due to Injury
South Africa’s fast-bowling resources have taken another hit. Ottneil Baartman has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia with a left hamstring injury, cutting short what was meant to be his return to the international spotlight.
Cricket South Africa confirmed the setback on Sunday, drawing a line under Baartman’s brief comeback to domestic action with Dolphins in the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1. He managed just five overs in Titans’ only innings and never reappeared with the bat in Dolphins’ second dig. That was the first sign something was wrong. The medical update that followed ended his immediate international prospects.
Into the gap steps Duan Jansen, another tall left-armer with fresh international miles in his legs. Jansen, who recently broke into the side during the Namibia T20I tri-series, has been named as Baartman’s replacement and will link up with the squad on September 19 when they assemble in Durban.
For Baartman, it’s another frustrating pause. He wasn’t involved in South Africa’s ongoing ODI series against Namibia, their first 50-over assignment since the India tour in November-December last year, but he had been part of that trip and last wore national colours in the New Zealand T20Is in March. Between then and now, he took his skills to Major League Cricket in June and July, before returning home and easing back into red-ball duty with Dolphins this week. The comeback lasted just those five overs.
Jansen, by contrast, arrives with momentum. The left-arm seamer made his ODI debut in the current series in Namibia and immediately left a mark, taking 4 for 31 in the second match. With South Africa already 2-0 up in the three-match rubber, he was one of three changes for the final fixture, a clear sign the management wanted a closer look at him in this format.
The Baartman blow lands at a time when South Africa’s pace cupboard is already under strain. Kagiso Rabada remains sidelined, still working his way back from a hamstring injury of his own. Gerald Coetzee has been recalled for the Australia ODIs after not featuring in the format since the 2023 World Cup, while Anrich Nortje has not been considered.
That leaves a pace unit built on a mix of youth, pedigree and promise: Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch, and now Duan Jansen stepping in for Baartman.
It’s a group with enough firepower to trouble Australia. The question is whether they can stay on the park long enough to show it.
