Tommy Coyle to Make Comeback for Charity Fight
Former Commonwealth lightweight champion Tommy Coyle is stepping back into the ring after more than five years away from professional boxing. The Hull native will face his old rival Derry Mathews in a charity bout to support boxing clubs in Hull and Liverpool.
A Fight with Purpose
The event, scheduled for December 11 in Hull at a venue yet to be announced, aims to raise funds for local boxing organizations. Both fighters share a history, having first met in 2013 at Craven Park, where Mathews claimed victory in the 10th round of their Commonwealth title fight.
"The response has been incredible. It’s been humbling and I’m excited, but I’m a little bit nervous as well," said Coyle.
Reflecting on their past battle, Coyle added, "Who knows what’s going to happen? In round 10, I got knocked out, so let’s just see if I can turn back the clock. We’re two old pros that are friends and we’re going to go at it and try and create some memories."
Personal Motivation Behind the Return
Coyle also opened up about the loss of his father Chris in 2022, who played a significant role in his career. This upcoming fight will be the first one his father won’t witness.
"It’s sad, but I can’t not do things just because he’s not around anymore. He isn’t coming back and I’ve had to learn to come to terms with that. I’ve really struggled with him not being around, he was my best friend," Coyle shared.
He mentioned that training and preparing for the fight will give him focus over the next three months: "For the next 12 weeks, it will give me something to focus on, something to chase, and something to occupy my mind. If I say I’m doing something, I always do it."
