Verstappen Stays with Red Bull as Mercedes Moves On
Toto Wolff has spent the last year hovering around Max Verstappen’s future like a shark circling a wounded rival. The prospect was real. Red Bull in turmoil, Mercedes rebuilding, and the sport’s most dominant driver suddenly looking less anchored than at any time in his Formula 1 career.
For a while, the paddock could almost see it: Verstappen in silver, fronting Mercedes’ next era.

So when Verstappen finally put pen to paper on a new Red Bull contract running until 2033, Wolff’s response carried no hint of regret.
“I think the most important thing was we had clarity in the team for a long time,” he told Sky Sports. “We are committed to George and Kimi and, in a way, that was just a logical consequence of what happened. Now, silly season is officially canceled, and everyone can focus on the racing.”
The message was clear: Mercedes had moved on before Verstappen did.
Verstappen Doubles Down on Red Bull
For Verstappen, the decision was as bold as it was loyal. He chose familiarity over upheaval, the known quantity of Red Bull over the unknowns of a new project.
This is the only Formula 1 team he has ever raced for. The partnership has defined an era, and now it is locked in for nearly a decade more. His new deal, stretching to 2033, signals total faith in the team’s ability to claw its way back to the front and stay there.
Crucially, it is also a bet on Laurent Mekies. Verstappen is banking on the Red Bull boss to steady the ship, refine the car under the current regulations, and close the gap enough to fight for wins again. The Dutchman is not signing up for nostalgia; he is signing up for more titles.
Red Bull now know their cornerstone is staying. The excuses are gone. The pressure is not.
Wolff: No Regrets, No What-Ifs
Once Verstappen’s deal became public, Wolff inevitably faced the obvious question: was he disappointed?
“No, not at all,” he replied. “We know each other well. With Kimi and George, it’s the perfect setup that we have and the perfect lineup. So there’s no disappointment.”
It didn’t sound like a man putting on a brave face. Mercedes have locked in a pairing that offers both present firepower and future upside. Russell is entering his peak years, finally at the age and experience level where consistency and aggression can meet. Antonelli, still far from his ceiling, brings the kind of long-term potential teams usually only dream of.
For Wolff, the Verstappen saga ends not with a missed opportunity, but with confirmation. Mercedes are not chasing someone else’s champion. They are trying to grow their own.
Two Philosophies, One Target
On one side, Verstappen and Red Bull are doubling down on continuity. The Dutchman trusts Mekies, trusts the structure, and trusts that the team can give him a car capable of winning races again in this regulation cycle.
On the other, Mercedes are betting on evolution. They have their lineup locked, their internal politics settled, and a clear hierarchy built around Russell and Antonelli.
No more whispers. No more fantasy moves. No more “what if Verstappen jumps?”
Silly season, as Wolff put it, is over. The next phase belongs to the stopwatch.
