WBC Mandates William Zepeda vs Jadier Herrera Lightweight Title Clash
WBC Orders Unification Bout Between William Zepeda and Jadier Herrera
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has made an uncommon move by ordering a unification fight in the lightweight division. This matchup will see reigning champion William Zepeda face interim titleholder Jadier Herrera. The fighters have until October 20th to reach an agreement for the bout.
Background of the Lightweight Titles
With Shakur Stevenson moving up in weight to challenge Teofimo Lopez for the super lightweight crown, Herrera (18-0, 16 KOs) seized the opportunity to fight for the interim belt. He secured this title by decisively defeating veteran Ricardo Nunez.
The WBC later stripped Stevenson due to unpaid sanctioning fees. Instead of simply promoting Herrera or placing him in a vacant title match, the organization allowed William Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs) to win the full championship against Lamont Roach Jr. this past August.
What Lies Ahead
Zepeda presents a formidable challenge at 24 years old. His notable win came after overcoming a designated opponent following a disqualification loss to Jon Fernandez. Despite questions about his record, both Zepeda and promoter Frank Warren are eager for this fight.
Unless Zepeda arranges a unification bout with Abdullah Mason or decides to vacate the title, the upcoming showdown with Herrera appears set. This consolidation aims to reduce the number of titles in the division and clarify the lightweight championship landscape.
