Patrick Mouratoglou and Tony Godsick on Why Players Embrace the Laver Cup Despite Fan Criticism

Players’ Fondness for the Laver Cup Explained by Patrick Mouratoglou

The ninth edition of Roger Federer's Laver Cup took place once again at London’s O2 Arena, drawing large crowds and delivering exciting matches with some of the world's top tennis players. Still, many tennis fans remain skeptical, dismissing the event as merely an exhibition, even though wins and losses there count toward official ATP rankings.

Several stars, including seven-time champion Carlos Alcaraz, have expressed their enjoyment of the tournament despite its unusual spot in the calendar. Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, shared his perspective on why the players value the event so much.

Mouratoglou Calls the Laver Cup a Refreshing Alternative

I can’t believe how many people say players’ reactions after winning the Laver Cup are odd because it’s just an exhibition. The Laver Cup is not an exhibition. It’s an alternative competition.
It’s a modern way to showcase tennis that fits what both the crowd and players want. It offers a completely different vibe from the regular tour. Does it make them less competitive? I don’t see any issue with mixing social time and fierce competition on court.

Mouratoglou compared the experience to going on vacation with friends but still playing high-stakes matches where every point matters deeply. He added that doing the same routine week after week can lead to boredom and mental fatigue for players, so events like the Laver Cup bring a fresh outlook and let players see tennis differently.

Federer’s Agent Highlights Unique Team Spirit and Mentorship

The Laver Cup was co-created by Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick, who recently explained why the event appeals so strongly to top players.

Each player has their own reasons, but a big one is rivals becoming teammates. There’s no other event where players who compete fiercely most of the year get to be on the same side.
This builds relationships. Plus, players get to be coached by legends like Pat Rafter, Andre Agassi, Yannick Noah, Tim Henman, John McEnroe, and Bjorn Borg.
They enjoy the competition and the venues. For example, Carlos Alcaraz had never played at the O2 Arena before. He said the event brings him joy and brings joy to tennis. The camaraderie and presentation stand out to many players.

Despite multiple invitations, world number one Jannik Sinner has not yet participated in the event.
