WWE Officials Interpret Turki Alalshikh’s Canelo Alvarez Remark as a Critique of TKO

Concerns Rise Over WWE's Upcoming Crown Jewel Event in Saudi Arabia

WWE leadership is reconsidering their plans amid safety issues in Saudi Arabia, just weeks before the scheduled Crown Jewel pay-per-view event. The partnership between WWE and Saudi Arabia has generated significant revenue, but it has also brought numerous challenges.

With ongoing regional tensions, some within the company are uneasy about proceeding with the event as planned.

Turki Alalshikh’s Comments Seen as a Message to WWE

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, many in WWE believe that recent remarks by Turki Alalshikh about boxer Canelo Alvarez were directed at the wrestling organization. Internally, WWE remains uncertain about traveling to Saudi Arabia.

Meltzer noted the final call will rest with TKO President Ari Emanuel, who will likely consult with Nick Khan and other senior executives before deciding.

Meltzer said: "In WWE, when that tweet came out, I mean they knew it was a message for them too. This is obviously going to be Ari Emanuel’s decision. This is way over Nick Khan’s head. I’m sure it won’t be without Nick Khan’s input."

Alalshikh’s Support for Canelo Amid Saudi Unrest

Days earlier, Turki Alalshikh took to X (formerly Twitter) addressing concerns about the potential cancellation of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Christian Mbilli fight due to instability in Saudi Arabia. He confirmed the bout would proceed and praised Canelo for standing firm during difficult times.

Alalshikh’s message read: "Canelo reached out and told me he’ll still fight in Riyadh this October, no matter what happens. He fears nothing. My country is home to the two Holy Mosques, land of peace, safety, rich civilisation, deep history, and kind-hearted people. Thank you to everyone who checked in and showed support. Hard times reveal true friends."

Timing of WWE Promotions Raises Questions

It’s notable that WWE began promoting Crown Jewel during Monday Night RAW the same week as Alalshikh’s pointed statement, airing just hours after his message. This could suggest tensions beneath the surface.

This isn’t the first time WWE has faced difficulties in its relationship with Saudi Arabia. In 2018, widespread corporate pullouts from the region caused backlash against WWE for holding Crown Jewel. Vince McMahon managed to shift focus by bringing Hulk Hogan back after a lengthy absence following Hall of Fame removal.

Event Status Remains Uncertain

Despite ongoing promotions, no guarantee exists that Crown Jewel will proceed as planned. TKO officials continue to assess the situation carefully.
