Yankuba Minteh Transfer Update: Liverpool's Pursuit Stalls
Yankuba Minteh’s representatives are refusing to let the Liverpool dream die, even as the clock ticks towards the deadline and reality bites.
The Brighton winger has been on Liverpool’s radar throughout August, a 22-year-old Gambia international with pace, profile and upside that fit the club’s usual recruitment blueprint. Twice the Reds have tested Brighton’s resolve. Twice they have been sent away, the second bid rising to £60m and still falling short of the Seagulls’ firm £80m valuation.
Brighton have stood their ground. Liverpool, increasingly, look like they’ve moved on.
Agents still pushing, door almost shut
On Tuesday morning, journalist Ben Jacobs summed up the mood from Minteh’s side. Speaking to talkSPORT, he explained that the player’s camp are still actively pursuing a move to Anfield and “hope that it happens today.” The optimism, though, is one-sided.
Jacobs also made it clear that the deal is unlikely to materialise before the 11pm deadline, with one major reason standing in the way: Cody Gakpo is staying put.
That single decision changes the entire equation.
Liverpool have already turned down an £80m offer from Manchester City for Gakpo in the past 24 hours, according to The Athletic. The rejected bid matches Brighton’s asking price for Minteh. One out, one in, at the same number – it could have been a straight swap in financial terms.
But that door has been slammed shut from Liverpool’s side. Gakpo remains at Anfield. The logic is hard to argue with.
Why Liverpool can walk away
Minteh is currently sidelined with an injury that is expected to keep him out for a significant spell. Gakpo, by contrast, has started the season sharply, with a goal and an assist from his first two games. One is fit and firing in red; the other is a costly gamble in the treatment room.
Selling the in-form Dutchman to fund a move for an injured winger would have been a hard sell internally and an even harder one to explain to supporters. Liverpool have chosen stability over speculation.
The club had also explored other options on the right flank. Ismaila Sarr of Crystal Palace was assessed as an alternative profile, but the landscape has shifted again. With Gakpo staying and Bradley Barcola already through the door from Paris Saint-Germain, the urgency to add another wide attacker has faded.
At this point, signing Minteh would be a luxury, not a necessity.
A crowded runway at Anfield
There is another simple, footballing problem: numbers.
If Minteh were to arrive today and none of Liverpool’s current forwards moved on, Andoni Iraola would be left with six senior wingers competing for two starting spots. It is the kind of depth managers dream of on paper and dread in real life when the team sheet goes up and big names are left out.
Rotation would look impressive. Dressing-room harmony might not.
For Minteh, the appeal of Liverpool is obvious. For Liverpool, the timing is all wrong.
His agents are expected to keep pushing through the final hours of the window, clinging to the hope that deadline day chaos might crack open a gap. But this is not a situation waiting for a twist. It is one that has already settled.
Unless something dramatic happens with an outgoing in attack, Liverpool’s stance is clear: Gakpo stays, the forward line remains intact, and Minteh does not arrive.
Deadline day has a habit of making fools of predictions, and no club is entirely immune to a late shock. Right now, though, all signs point in one direction – the 22-year-old looks set to stay at Brighton, his Liverpool move parked, his next big step delayed rather than denied.
