Auqib Nabi Joins Surrey for County Championship
Auqib Nabi’s surge continues. From spearheading Jammu and Kashmir’s fairytale Ranji Trophy win to landing a lucrative IPL deal, the fast bowler has now stepped into the English county circuit with Surrey.
The club confirmed that Nabi has signed a short-term contract and will be available for their next three County Championship fixtures, against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan. Three games, six weeks of relentless cricket, and a title race tightening by the day — Surrey wanted fresh pace, and they have gone to one of Indian domestic cricket’s most in-form quicks.
“With the exceptionally challenging schedule of six games in six weeks, with minimal recovery between matches along with international fixtures, we’ve had to add options to our bowling stocks for the County Championship run in,” Alec Stewart, Surrey’s Director of Men’s Cricket, said. “We look forward to welcoming Auqib to the group this week.”
The schedule has been brutal. Surrey’s attack has shouldered heavy workloads across formats, and the risk of burnout is real. Nabi arrives as cover, but also as a genuine threat with the ball — a bowler riding a wave of confidence.
His last domestic season in India was nothing short of transformative. Nabi took 60 wickets in Jammu and Kashmir’s historic Ranji Trophy campaign, driving them to their maiden title and walking away with the player of the tournament award. Those numbers didn’t just turn heads; they kicked open doors.
The IPL came next. Delhi Capitals moved quickly, securing him on a bumper contract for the 2026 season. He featured in five games, a first taste of the league’s intensity and scrutiny, and another step up in a career that has accelerated sharply over the past year.
Recognition at national level followed. The 29-year-old earned a place with India A and then a call-up to the senior Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka, drafted in as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement. He did not debut, but the message was clear: he is now on the radar.
For Nabi, Surrey is both opportunity and education.
“It’s an honour to join Surrey, one of the best Clubs in England,” he said. “I’m looking forward to learning from the group and helping them for the next three matches.”
The deal is short, the window narrow. Yet for a fast bowler in form, three Championship games in English conditions can stretch a reputation a long way — and perhaps nudge open the door that leads to a full India cap.
