Australia have signalled a hard reset of their one-day plans, dropping World Cup winner Marnus Labuschagne from the ODI squad for their African tour while recalling Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc for the South African leg.
The reigning ODI world champions, still basking in the glow of that 2023 triumph over India in Ahmedabad, have not been swayed by sentiment. Labuschagne, who played a pivotal hand with a half-century in that final, finds himself on the outside almost a year out from the next World Cup.
This is a cold call on a player who has been a near-permanent fixture. Labuschagne has missed only five of Australia’s previous 56 ODIs, yet the 32-year-old has been cut from the group that will tackle back-to-back three-match series against Zimbabwe and South Africa later this month. Also omitted from the squad that toured Pakistan and Bangladesh in May and June are Matt Short, Ben Dwarshuis, Todd Murphy and Liam Scott.
The message is clear: past deeds don’t guarantee a boarding pass to the next World Cup, which will be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Cummins and Starc back in the frame
If Labuschagne’s omission is the headline, the return of Australia’s premier quicks is the exclamation mark. Captain Pat Cummins and left-arm spearhead Mitchell Starc will both feature in the South African leg of the ODI tour, restoring the pace battery that underpinned the 2023 title run.
Mitchell Marsh, who continues to grow into his leadership role, and Travis Head also return after sitting out the recent subcontinental ODIs in Pakistan and Bangladesh. With Josh Hazlewood and Cameron Green included as well, Australia’s seam stocks look imposing again.
The Zimbabwe series will give fringe players and new faces more room. Once the team crosses into South Africa, the dial shifts towards something closer to full strength, with Cummins and Starc parachuted in for sharper, higher-stakes preparation.
