Brydon Carse Handcuffed Outside Derby Nightclub: Police Investigation
England fast bowler Brydon Carse is at the centre of a police investigation after being handcuffed outside a Derby nightclub during a night out at the weekend.
Images shared across social media on Sunday showed the 31-year-old in handcuffs, surrounded by officers in Derby city centre on Saturday night, outside Molly Malone's bar. The pictures quickly circulated in cricket circles, raising questions over the seamer’s immediate future with England.
Derbyshire Police confirmed Carse had been briefly arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, before that decision was reversed.
"A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night," read a statement from the force. "However the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area."
That initially appeared to be the end of it. It was not.
By Wednesday, Derbyshire Police confirmed a separate line of inquiry: "We are investigating allegations of an assault in Derby city centre. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing."
The force has not named Carse in relation to the assault investigation, in line with standard practice, but the timing and location match the incident in which he was detained and then released.
The England and Wales Cricket Board has already acted. The ECB confirmed that the matter will be examined by the Cricket Regulator and, as a direct consequence, Carse has been removed from the England squad for the second Test against Pakistan.
For a player attempting to cement his place in the national set-up, the timing is brutal. Carse, who has been seen as part of England’s medium-term pace plans, now finds his international momentum checked not by injury or form, but by off-field scrutiny.
His domestic employers have taken a different stance. Durham have selected Carse in their County Championship side for the match against Gloucestershire, indicating he remains available for club duty while the investigations unfold.
Carse has been approached for comment but has not yet responded. The ECB has also declined to expand on its brief statement, leaving the governing body’s disciplinary and regulatory processes to run in the background while Derbyshire Police continue their work.
For now, the images of an England bowler in handcuffs on a city-centre pavement do the talking, while the game waits to see what the investigation uncovers – and what it means for Carse’s place in England’s plans.
