Kellie Harrington Returns for European Elite Championships 2026
Kellie Harrington is officially back in the thick of it.
Ireland’s double Olympic champion has been named in a stacked team for the 2026 European Elite Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, running from 17-25 September – her first major benchmark tournament since that golden summer in Paris.
The Dubliner’s retirement never felt like a closed door. She slipped back through it in December, lacing up the gloves for an exhibition at Dublin’s Mansion House and signalling that the story was not quite finished. In January she underlined that point with a 12th national title. By June, she was standing on top of the podium again, this time at the four nations tournament in Glasgow.
Now comes the real test. A continental championship. Ranking points. Pressure. And a clear road towards Los Angeles, which Harrington has already admitted sits firmly on her radar.
Powerhouse squad around Harrington
Harrington is not travelling alone as Ireland roll heavy into Sofia.
Aoife O’Rourke, a double Olympian, reigning world champion and four-time continental champion, anchors the middle of the team. Her résumé speaks for itself; she arrives as one of the marquee names of the entire tournament. Alongside her is sister Lisa O’Rourke, the 2022 world champion and 2025 world silver medallist, adding serious depth and pedigree.
The Irish selection bristles with Paris experience. Six Olympians from the 2024 Games are on the plane: Daina Moorehouse at 51kg, Jenny Lehane at 54kg, Jude Gallagher at 60kg, Dean Clancy at 65kg, Jack Marley at 90kg, and Michaela Walsh at 57kg, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist at that weight.
Jon McConnell steps in at 70kg, adding fresh competition to a busy division.
Rounding out the line-up is a blend of proven champions and rising force. Shannon Sweeney, the 2024 European champion, brings recent continental gold to the mix. Cliona D’Arcy arrives as a world youth champion and European U23 bronze medallist, another sign that the conveyor belt from underage to elite remains firmly in motion. Evelyn Igharo (70kg) and Gavin Rafferty (75kg) complete a squad that looks built to contend, not just to participate.
Serious business in Sofia
This is not a warm-up event. The European Elite Championships in Sofia is a World Boxing ranking tournament, with 33 federations eligible to take part. The draw lands on 16 September, the moment when paths to medals become brutally real.
Ireland have treated it that way. The team has been in camp since July, banking rounds and sharpening edges. As a final push, Boxing Ireland will stage a multi-nations sparring camp at the High Performance Unit at the Institute of Sport from 2-9 September, bringing in external opposition to test every adjustment before gloves are raised under the lights in Bulgaria.
Harrington’s return gives the campaign a focal point, a familiar champion stepping back into the fire. Around her stands arguably one of the deepest Irish squads ever sent to a European Championships.
Sofia will show just how far this group can push the standard again – and how loudly Ireland still intends to punch on the road to Los Angeles.
