Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from ODI Squad Ahead of World Cup
Twelve months out from a World Cup, you usually want your plans locked in, your pillars settled, your doubts fading. For Marnus Labuschagne, the opposite is true. The message from selectors could hardly be clearer.
Australia’s prolific Test No. 3 has been cut from the ODI squad for the tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa, a decision that lands like a warning shot with the World Cup a year away and the tournament to be played in the same two countries.
Labuschagne’s omission follows a lean run in 50-over cricket on the recent tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh, where he struggled to turn starts into match-shaping scores. The selectors have acted. He is one of five players dropped, alongside Matt Short, Ben Dwarshuis, Todd Murphy and Liam Scott.
This isn’t a gentle reshuffle. It’s a reset.
New blood, hard calls
In their place, the door opens for youth and for those on the fringes. Victorian teenager Ollie Peake has been handed a chance to impress with the bat, a significant show of faith for a player still at the start of his professional journey. NSW all-rounder Joel Davies is also in the frame to make his ODI debut during the Zimbabwe leg of the tour.
The squad carries a clear theme: build for a World Cup, but don’t compromise on standards now.
Chairman of selectors George Bailey underlined the importance of this six-game block.
“This six-game series is an important lead-in to next year's World Cup, being played in the same countries, for the group,” Bailey said, framing the Zimbabwe and South Africa matches as more than just another overseas assignment.
Core returns, pace spearheads stay
The spine of the side is also being reassembled. Mitch Marsh, Travis Head and Josh Inglis are all back, bolstering both the top order and the middle-overs engine room. The return of that trio hints at the shape of Australia’s first-choice XI when the stakes rise.
Then there’s the clearest sign of all that this is a World Cup rehearsal: Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have both been selected. Australia’s premier fast-bowling pair rarely travel without a major purpose these days. Their inclusion signals intent – to own the new ball next year and to hit the Australian summer in full rhythm.
“As such it's great to have Mitch (Marsh), Travis and Josh returning, then Pat and Mitch (Starc) for the SA leg. This gives us our core of players mixed with some we think will continue to make an impression,” Bailey said.
The balance is deliberate: hardened campaigners alongside players being groomed to carry the side beyond the current cycle.
Opportunity knocks
For Peake and Davies, this tour is more than a taste of international cricket. It is a live audition.
“For Ollie and Joel, who we rate very highly, it's another fantastic opportunity and a further chance for them to continue their exposure and growth in the Australian team,” Bailey added.
Those words matter. Exposure. Growth. The selectors are not hiding the fact that these matches will shape the depth chart for the World Cup and beyond.
Australia will play three ODIs against Zimbabwe on September 15, 18 and 20, before shifting to South Africa for three more on September 24, 27 and 30. Same conditions, same challenges, same venues that will matter again in a year’s time.
By then, Australia’s World Cup squad will be locked. The question is whether Marnus Labuschagne can force his way back into that conversation, or whether this cut is the moment his ODI story starts to close.
