Mukesh Kumar Joins Nottinghamshire for Title Challenge

Nottinghamshire have turned to India seam bowler Mukesh Kumar as they sharpen their bid to retain the County Championship crown.

The 32-year-old, capped three times in Tests for India and last seen in the longest format against England earlier this year, arrives at Trent Bridge with the champions right in the thick of the title fight. Notts sit second in Division One, only four points behind leaders Somerset, with just two matches left. The margins are thin. So are the nerves.

Kumar brings weight. He has 233 first-class wickets to his name, all of them earned on Indian pitches, often unforgiving and rarely generous to seam. Now comes a very different examination: late-season county cricket, heavy skies, and a title race that could turn on a single spell.

His timing could hardly be sharper. He lands in England on the back of a decisive performance in the Duleep Trophy final, where his 3-62 helped East Zone beat South Zone and lift the trophy for the first time in 14 years. That is the sort of form coaches notice, and the sort of temperament title contenders crave.

Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores called Kumar a “quality” addition at “a crucial time of the season” – a clear nod to the pressure and the stakes. This is not a signing for the future. It is a signing for the next two games.

County titles are often decided by the bowlers who can squeeze one more effort out of tired bodies and used pitches in September. Nottinghamshire now have a fresh, international seamer walking into that scenario, with the ball likely to be in his hand when it matters most.
