Zaheer Khan Appointed CSK Head Coach for IPL 2027
Chennai Super Kings have turned to one of India’s great fast-bowling minds to steer their next chapter, appointing Zaheer Khan as head coach for IPL 2027 and drawing a definitive line under the Stephen Fleming era.
Fleming’s departure, after an extraordinary 18-year association with the franchise, leaves a sizeable void. He was more than a head coach; he was the quiet constant through titles, rebuilds, and generational shifts. Now he moves on to a full-time international challenge with England as their men’s Test head coach, and CSK hand the reins to a man who spent much of his playing career trying to outthink batting line-ups, not just outbowl them.
From spearhead to strategist
Zaheer retired from the IPL in 2017 after stints with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, finishing with 102 wickets in 100 matches at 27.27. Those numbers only scratch the surface of his pedigree. Across formats for India, he collected 610 wickets and became the reference point for left-arm pace in the country.
Since hanging up his boots, he has moved smoothly into the game’s strategic corridors. Mumbai Indians first installed him as Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019, trusting him with the architecture of a powerhouse squad. He later shifted into the role of head of global development at the franchise, broadening his brief from dressing-room influence to long-term talent pathways.
Most recently, Lucknow Super Giants brought him in as mentor for IPL 2025, another nod to his reputation as a fast-bowling whisperer and a sharp reader of conditions. His exit from Lucknow ahead of the following season cleared the runway for this move to Chennai.
A rival turned custodian
Zaheer knows what it means to face CSK at full volume. He has been the bowler at the top of his mark at Chepauk, staring into that yellow wall of noise. Now he crosses the line, from rival to custodian of the “legacy franchise” he once tried to dismantle.
"It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history," Zaheer said in the club’s announcement, capturing both the weight of the job and the lure of the stage.
For CSK, this is not a gamble on a novice. It is a calculated shift towards a coach steeped in modern T20 thinking, with a bowler’s eye for match-ups and a long record of shaping younger quicks.
CSK’s brain trust backs a new voice
Rupa Gurunath, the team’s owner, framed the appointment as a natural fit for a side that has always prided itself on continuity and clarity of role.
"We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings. Zaheer's distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise," she said.
That “core” has been the secret of CSK’s durability. Where other teams have lurched from overhaul to overhaul, Chennai have typically tweaked, not torn down. Zaheer’s task will be to protect that identity while refreshing a squad that has already begun to move beyond some of its iconic names.
Managing Director KS Viswanathan underlined why the franchise believes Zaheer is the right man to oversee that transition.
“Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India's success in the 2000s. He's one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family," he said.
A new chapter in yellow
CSK now enter IPL 2027 with a different silhouette in the dugout. The calm, familiar figure of Fleming gives way to a former spearhead who built his career on reading batters, adjusting fields, and winning the long game.
The pressure at Chepauk will be instant and intense. A fanbase used to playoff runs and trophies will not accept a gentle bedding-in period. Zaheer arrives with the credibility of 610 international wickets and a decade of backroom work to lean on. What he adds next will decide whether Chennai’s golden run evolves or stalls.
The Fleming era is over. The Zaheer Khan era starts with expectation already swinging in from over the wicket.
