Marnus Labuschagne Retains Spot in Australia Squad for South Africa Tour
Marnus Labuschagne is going home – and he’s taking his spot at No. 3 with him.
Under pressure after more than three years without a Test hundred, the 32-year-old has retained his place in a 16-man Australia squad for next month’s Test tour of South Africa, a country he left as a child and has never faced in Test whites on their own soil.
The selectors have resisted calls to drop him, even as he has slipped out of the limited-overs plans. For now, his Test pedigree still carries weight.
Homecoming for Labuschagne, opportunity for others
Born in South Africa and raised there for the first 10 years of his life, Labuschagne’s return adds an unmistakable narrative edge to a tour that already carries plenty of intrigue. He will walk out in Durban, Gqeberha and Cape Town not as a local prospect, but as one of the pillars of an Australian batting order still built around him and Steve Smith.
The squad, led by Pat Cummins, stays largely intact from the group that faced Bangladesh in Mackay last month, but there are fresh storylines around the fringes.
Cooper Connolly, the clean-hitting all-rounder, earns a call-up and brings a dash of aggression to the middle-order options. Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann returns to bolster the slow-bowling stocks alongside Nathan Lyon, a clear nod to conditions that can bite and turn as a South African series wears on.
Michael Neser, another South Africa-born quick who has long hovered on the edge of the Test side, is also included. For him, too, this is a personal tour as much as a professional one.
Pace, depth and a long road ahead
Cummins will again marshal a familiar pace cartel. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are named, with Scott Boland and Neser in reserve, giving Australia the sort of seam depth that has underpinned their dominance across formats.
Cameron Green and Travis Head add ballast and flexibility with bat and ball, while Alex Carey remains first-choice wicketkeeper, backed up by Josh Inglis. Matthew Renshaw and Beau Webster round out the batting and all-round options, giving the selectors latitude if form or conditions demand a reshuffle.
Australia’s men will play three Tests: Durban from October 9-13, Gqeberha from October 18-22, and Cape Town from October 27-31. Three venues, three very different surfaces, and a tour that will test both technique and temperament.
For Labuschagne, it is more than that. It is a chance to silence the noise, to turn a lean run into a landmark series, and to finally raise his bat for a Test century in the country where his story began.
