Usama Mir Returns to Worcestershire for Final County Championship Matches
Usama Mir is heading back to New Road – and just in time for Worcestershire’s run-in.
The Pakistan leg-spinner has re-signed for the rest of the season as a replacement for all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel, giving the Pears a familiar and trusted option as the County Championship campaign reaches its final stretch.
Mir’s return carries a sense of continuity. He made his first-class debut for Worcestershire in 2023 and now drops straight back into Division Two action, available for the club’s last three fixtures, starting with the home match against Northamptonshire on Tuesday.
This isn’t a shot in the dark. Mir has already been part of the club’s white-ball plans this year, having agreed a three-year T20 deal earlier in the season. Worcestershire have invested heavily in him, and from 2027 he will even be classified as a ‘local’ player, underlining how central they expect him to be to their future.
For now, though, the focus is on the red ball and the immediate need. Swanepoel’s absence left a gap that had to be filled quickly. The schedule allowed no breathing space, and Worcestershire moved for the bowler they know best.
“Usama is someone we know very well and is a high-class operator who will bring plenty of experience to our side for the final three County Championship matches,” head coach Alan Richardson told the club’s website, underlining both the trust and the expectation around the 28-year-old.
The timing matters. With only three games left, selection gambles are a luxury Worcestershire cannot afford. Mir offers control, variation and a proven temperament, and crucially, he knows the dressing room and the demands of the county game.
“Given the short turnaround we had to act swiftly to find a replacement, so to be able to add him to the squad before Tuesday is a real boost for us,” Richardson added.
Worcestershire now turn into the final bend of their Championship season with a leg-spinner they believe can tilt sessions, and perhaps matches, their way.
